Interesting, the ovulation test of modern times isn't when it was invented per se. A test has always been in existence in some fashion or the other since ancient times. However, it is only recently in the last few decades that the ovulation test has been perfected to provide reliability and high levels of accuracy in predicting when ovulation occurs in a woman.

An ovulation test detects Luteinizing Hormone or LH. This is usually present in a woman's body. However, the levels increase dramatically [though for short periods] half way through the menstrual cycle. This is the time when a woman is most fertile and is very likely to get pregnant through unprotected sex. Therefore, an ovulation test focuses on identifying this ovulation window so that woman experiencing infertility can intelligently plan for unprotected sexual relations that may lead to pregnancy.

There are 2 tests that provide test results for women to know if they are undergoing ovulation windows. The first ovulation test is through test strips. A midstream test is the second ovulation test. Both are equally effective and reliable in terms of test results. These tests are a great hit and popular with women since they can be applied at home addressing privacy concerns. Moreover, they are inexpensive, quick and don't require any formal or special training. They come handy with a list of instructions to be followed that are relatively layperson centric and easy to understand and apply. The test results are also available within a matter of 5 minutes and women don't need to always go the clinic, hospital or visit the Doctor. Another USP of these ovulation tests is that they don't require a prescription and are available over the counter.

Both tests detect the presence of LH in the woman's body passed through urine. The test strips ovulation test involves urine collection of the woman concerned in a container and immersing the strip in it for a pre-determined time. On the other hand, in the midstream test, the woman needs to hold the strip in the urine stream. Both tests take about 5 minutes to generate the results. Both tests have a control band and a test band. The control band indicates whether the test is functional or not and additionally, has a colour intensity / baseline for interpretation of results that appear on the test colour band. If the colour intensity on the test band is equal to or greater than the control colour band, then it is positive for the ovulation window.

When the LH surge is detected by the ovulation test, the fertility of a woman is likely to be very high over the next 3 days. Peak fertility is attained within 36 hours after LH Surge. This of course is good news for women to plan their pregnancies.
